P.E.
At Emley First School we strongly believe that regular physical activity, in free time, in structured PE lessons and in organised competitions, is essential for the healthy development of all children, both in body and in mind.
All children will develop a love of exercise and physical activity that will last a lifetime, and will give them good physical health, good mental health, confidence, motivation, friendship and joy.
Children will understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson.
In order to achieve our intention at Emley First School we will give every pupil a fair opportunity to access the components of our PE curriculum in order to reach the following objectives:
- Children to leave Emley First School with a positive attitude towards physical health, activity, and personal wellbeing.
- Children to use physical education at Emley First School to develop their understanding of competition, including fair play, sportsmanship teamwork, passion and playing within the rules.
- Children to have a sound knowledge of the basic skills needed to access specific sports.
- Children to use physical education at Emley First School to develop themselves as a whole person - mentally, emotionally, personally, physically, and socially.
PE at Emley First School is always delivered in a safe, secure environment by qualified teaching staff who are supported by qualified coaches where appropriate, we aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to achieve their personal best and develop an understanding of good health and how to maintain this. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives. Swimming is an important life skill and we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres and recognising how to stay safe around water.
- At Emley First School, PE provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; gross and fine motor skills, gymnastics, dance multi-skills, athletics, attacking and defending games, striking and fielding, invasion games, swimming and outdoor and adventurous learning/ activities.
- Our long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
- Every lesson is taught by a qualified teacher ensuring the delivery is accessible for all children, drawing on their own CPD learning through our partnerships with Shelley Sports Partnership and external sports coaches.
- We continue to build strong community links with local providers and coaching companies in order to continually enhance teachers’ knowledge as well as enhance the learning of children.
- All children to participate in two hours of high-quality PE lessons each week. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities that we provide. Our Play Leaders are trained to encourage and engage children in physical activities at playtimes and lunchtimes.
- All children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the Shelley Sports Partnership. This is an inclusive approach and we aim to ensure all children take part in at least one event over the academic year.
- Swimming is taught to pupils in Key Stage 2 and is provided by qualified Kirklees Swimming Teachers employed by KAL (Kirklees Active Leisure) at Scissett Swimming Baths. Our aim is for all children to be able to swim 25m before leaving Emley First School as a year 5.
- We support the government guideline of children being active for 30 minutes during the school day by providing active playtimes and lunchtimes.
- The School Sports Premium is used to improve the provision of PE at Emley First School in a number of ways, to be actively involved in the Shelley Pyramid Sports Partnership, to work with PE specialists from the pyramid and external providers, to provide children with the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular clubs and to ensure all children take part in food technology lessons throughout the year.
-
At the end of each year, pupils will have gained a deepening understanding of Physical Education and Sport. We evidence this through:
- Pupil Voice: Discussion and feedback, children talk enthusiastically about PE and enjoy their PE lessons. Children are enthustastic about extra-curricular clubs and taking part in the sports pyramid competitions. Play leaders state what resources they find beneficial when delivering activities to other children during playtime and lunchtime.
- Evidence in Knowledge: Pupils have a sound understanding of skills and how to implement these in fair game play. They will deepen their knowledge of many sports, skills, rules and being a good sportsperson.
- Evidence in Skills: Pupils use acquired vocabulary to interpret and convey their understanding of sports and differing rules. Pupils develop new skills and are able to put these into a game situation.
- Breadth and Depth: Teachers plan opportunities for pupils to learn new skills in a range of different sports to create an enjoyment of exercise and show a positive attitude towards physical activity.
